Entwining sound, space and narratives. Sound design approaches in exhibitions

Abstract

This article explores the evolution of exhibition design, focusing on the integration of sound as a key narrative and experiential element. In recent decades, technological advances and discoveries in neuroscience have influenced the design of exhibition spaces, transforming them into multimodal experiences that go beyond mere visual engagement. Sound emerges as a central tool, capable of shaping the emotional, spatial, and narrative dimensions of exhibitions. Through case studies and interviews with exhibition and sound designers, I propose four sound design approaches – transparent, relational, unexpected, and imaginary – as strategies for amplifying narratives through non-verbal sounds and soundscapes. Balancing its informative and evocative roles, sound is a fundamental component in generating meaning and creating engaging, communicative, and memorable experiences.
