This paper investigates the extent to which sound, in all its facets (thereby including also music and voice), is used in museums as a means to enhance the visitor experience and to facilitate visitors’ engagement with the exhibition. This is done by creating a taxonomy of its most common uses and analysing them in the light of a theory of soundscape.
